The oath only breaks if the paladin gets a killing blow. However if you allow the NPC to follow you thus turning all goblins hostile to your presence, you will still break your oath when slaying the goblins unless you let the NPC get the killing blow because the Goblins are just acting in their own good faith towards a escaped prisoner.

Wanted to do a respec for my Oathbreaker Paladin, just to change some stats around, and found out this is not possible. Apparently to prevent easily "fixing" your broken oath or other exploits. But I don't even want to do that. I don't want to change class at all, just my ability scores.
