John deere 4020 problems

Total for the rebuild was $700 but was still cheaper than buying a reman brake valve, at least according to the local JD dealer anyway. Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable. It solved the entire problem and it stops great. No more wheel lock up. The JD 4020 is now ready to go back to work.

I have a John Deere 4020 Diesel that developed a miss. The first step to cure miss was to remove the pencil injectors and have them tested. All cracked/popped adequately, however, 2 of the injectors test pattern was not real good if pressure was added slowly so I replaced them. This did not cure the miss. Then slide the outer quadrant back in and if possible, add an extra washer behind the snap ring to remove excess slop in quadrants. Rod #24 should not need adjustment if shifting was ok before the other rod broke. Stand-by pressure should be 2250 psi. disconnect all the lines & linkages.. remove the side cover on the pump, 2 flat head screws, drain.. 2 lines under the side cover, 1 is stationary & 1 rotates.. rotate engine until BOTH lines line-up & stop.. When this tractor was evening used daily we never had any trouble with the steering. Now that it only gets used very little we have steering trouble. When I place it in the L or D posistion ...Good morning, Our '72 4020 leaks significantly from the steering motor pinion seal during cold weather operation. The colder the weather, the worse the leak. For reference, last week when operating at - 20 F, the leak was a steady stream. Once the tractor and/or ambient temp. warms up the leak stops or slows to an imperceptible amount.Remove the screw, install a plastic line on the fitting and start the tractor. Turn the steering wheel to the RH stop position and open the fitting slowly. Let oil bleed out the line until no bubbles are present then tighten the fitting. Be careful as the steering wheel may jump after the bubbles are gone.
