The Norteños (Northerners) are affiliated with Nuestra Familia (Our Family) and are a coalition of Latino gangs in Northern California. The traditional rivals of the Norteños are the Sureños (Southerners). The gangs grew in the late 1960s when Hispanic inmates of California's state prison system separated into two rival groups.
