Rachel ashwell
Rachel Ashwell grew up in London, the child of an antique book dealer and a doll maker. She fell in love with fleamarkets at an early age and from her parents, learned the art of buying and selling. Still a teenager, she moved to Hollywood as a stylist for television where she met her husband.
Rachel Ashwell founded a furniture chain called Shabby Chic and in 1996 published a book around the aesthetic, which she described as "the aura of old money, cushy comfort, and crafted indifference." An offshoot of shabby chic is a trend towards "relicking" (from relic) of guitars and bass guitars to create a "roadworn" appearance.
