Rioja is a designated denominación de origen calificada (DOCa), or ‘Qualified Designation of Origin’, the highest category in Spanish wine regulation. Many wines are traditionally blended from grapes from all three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa. But recently, single-zone wines have become more popular.
