When I moved into my house, the water heater had a pan, but no pipe attached to direct the water away from the wall (it’s located in an elevated wall cut out). 4 months in, water heaters bottom rusts out. Took minimal time to replace the water heater. But many hours replacing all the drywall it got wet in the process lol.
